Nvidia Shield TV Pro Hits $300: Is It Still Worth Buying?

4 Min Read

Seven years is a long time in tech. Most streaming devices get replaced, discontinued, or quietly forgotten long before they hit that milestone. Yet here we are in 2026, and the Nvidia Shield TV Pro is still being manufactured, still being sold, and now, still getting more expensive. Nvidia just bumped the price of the Shield TV Pro from $199.99 to $299.99, a full $100 jump that feels jarring for a device built around 2019 hardware.

Why Is a 7-Year-Old Streaming Box Getting Pricier?

The short answer is AI, and not in the way you might expect. The generative AI boom has created massive demand for memory and storage components across the entire tech industry. Nvidia itself confirmed that rising component costs, particularly memory, are driving the price increase. With no stockpile of older, cheaper parts to draw from, every new Shield TV Pro unit Nvidia builds today costs significantly more to produce than it did even a year ago.

It is worth noting the irony here. Nvidia is arguably the single biggest driver of AI hardware demand on the planet. Its GPUs and AI accelerators power data centers worldwide, and that demand has helped push component costs sky-high for everyone, including Nvidia’s own consumer products. The company is both the cause and a casualty of the component price surge, at least when it comes to the Shield.

What You Actually Get for $300

To be fair, the Shield TV Pro is not your average streaming stick. It runs a full version of Android TV, supports virtually every video codec you can name, handles 4K HDR with AI-powered upscaling, and doubles as a capable Plex media server. For home theater enthusiasts, cord-cutters with large local media libraries, or anyone who wants Dolby Vision and Atmos support without compromise, the Shield remains genuinely impressive.

That said, the competition has gotten very good and very cheap. Devices like the Roku Ultra, Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max, and Apple TV 4K offer strong streaming performance at a fraction of the new Shield price. If your main goal is watching Netflix, Disney Plus, or YouTube in 4K, spending $300 on a seven-year-old platform is a tough sell in 2026.

Should You Buy the Nvidia Shield TV Pro Right Now?

Here is where buying intent really matters. Stock of the Shield TV Pro has been thin for months, and the price jump suggests Nvidia is finally manufacturing new units in earnest again. If you have been on the fence, availability is better now than it has been in a while, with units listed at Best Buy at the new $299.99 price point.

For power users and media server enthusiasts, the Shield TV Pro is still a best-in-class device worth the premium. For casual streamers, this is the perfect moment to compare alternatives and make a smarter, budget-conscious choice before prices climb any further across the board.
