Walk into any electronics store or scroll through router listings online and you will notice something a little wild: routers that look like alien spacecraft, covered in four, six, sometimes eight antennas jutting out in every direction. It is easy to write this off as a marketing stunt, but there is genuine engineering logic behind every single one of those arms. Understanding it can actually save you money when buying your next router.

From One Lane to Many: How MIMO Changed Everything

Not long ago, most home routers shipped with a single antenna. That was fine when households had one or two devices and the biggest online activity was checking email. Having several spaced-apart antennas means at least one is likely to receive a clean signal even when others are dealing with interference. Then there is MU-MIMO, which allows a router to communicate with several devices simultaneously rather than rapidly cycling between them one at a time. More Antennas Does Not Always Mean a Better Buy

Here is the honest truth for most shoppers: a solid router with two to four antennas covers the vast majority of homes comfortably. Eight antennas make more sense for large properties, busy offices, or cafes with dozens of simultaneous users. Also worth remembering is that no router can exceed the speed your internet plan provides, so an eight-antenna flagship will not make a slow connection fast.
