With a base price of $24,950, the Michigan startup’s Blank Slate truck is positioned as the most accessible electric pickup on the market today. At a time when the average new vehicle costs over $50,000, that pitch carries real weight. But affordability always comes with tradeoffs, and for the Slate Truck, the most significant one lives inside its battery pack.
A Minimalist EV Built for the Everyday Driver
The Blank Slate strips away the extras that inflate modern vehicle prices. No automatic windows, no built-in speakers, and no unnecessary tech bloat. What you do get is a rear-mounted 135 kW motor producing 181 horsepower, 195 lb-ft of torque, and 2,000 pounds of towing capacity. That performance profile sits comfortably alongside the 2026 Ford Maverick, a truck that has already proven popular among budget-conscious buyers. A zero-to-60 time of around 8 seconds is not going to turn heads at a drag strip, but it is honest, functional performance for commuters and weekend haulers.
Slate also leans into customization as a differentiator. With over 200 optional accessories and a wide range of vinyl-wrap exterior options, the company is betting that buyers want a blank canvas, not a fully loaded showroom vehicle. Where the Range Reality Hits Hard
Here is where the value equation gets complicated. The Slate Truck carries a 63 kWh battery pack with an estimated range of 205 miles. For context, competing EV trucks from established brands typically land between 280 and 450 miles per charge. That gap is not trivial for buyers who associate electric trucks with long-haul capability.
Slate’s own response to this criticism is rooted in data. The company cites the average American driver traveling roughly 37 miles per day, a figure supported by Consumer Affairs research, as justification for the 205-mile ceiling. Charging speeds are reasonable: 30 minutes to 80 percent on a DC Level 3 charger, 5 hours on Level 2, and 20 to 50 miles of overnight recovery on a standard Level 1 outlet. A partnership with home charging firm Treehouse makes Level 2 home installation more accessible for new owners.
For daily urban and suburban use, the math actually works. The problem is perception. Range anxiety remains one of the top barriers to EV adoption in the United States, and a 205-mile ceiling does little to ease those concerns for buyers still on the fence.

Slate is scheduled to begin shipping from its Warsaw, Indiana factory later this year.
